Use a local OpenAI-compatible endpoint without accidentally exposing it to the public Internet
You should be able to demonstrate the result described in the lesson and explain why each step was necessary.
Step-by-step
Bind deliberately
Start the model server on the LAN interface only if another trusted device needs to reach it. If only one machine uses it, bind to localhost.
Test locally first
Use curl or a small script on the same machine before troubleshooting network access.
Allow only the LAN
If a firewall rule is needed, scope it to your private subnet rather than 0.0.0.0/0.
Do not port-forward the model API
A local inference endpoint often has no authentication by default. Keep it private or put a properly authenticated gateway in front of it.
Log application errors, not secrets
Capture status codes and latency, but do not write API secrets or sensitive prompts into public logs.
You should be able to demonstrate the result described in the lesson and explain why each step was necessary.
Troubleshooting
If a command or screen differs from the lesson, stop and verify the version you are using before forcing a change.
What you learned
You now understand the purpose of this part of the system and have a concrete result you can verify before continuing to the next lesson.
