Call APIs and handle failures correctly

October 3, 2026•Intermediate•40 min
Intermediate40 minStep 4

Build integrations that fail predictably instead of hanging or corrupting data

Goal
You should be able to demonstrate the result described in the lesson and explain why each step was necessary.

Step-by-step

01

Set connection and request timeouts

Never allow a network request to wait forever.

02

Check HTTP status

Do not parse a success body when the server returned an error status.

03

Validate JSON before use

Remote services can return malformed or unexpected responses.

04

Retry selectively

Retry transient failures with backoff; do not blindly retry validation errors.

05

Protect secrets

Load API keys from environment/configuration outside the public repository and web root.

Verify before moving on
You should be able to demonstrate the result described in the lesson and explain why each step was necessary.

Troubleshooting

If a command or screen differs from the lesson, stop and verify the version you are using before forcing a change.

What you learned

You now understand the purpose of this part of the system and have a concrete result you can verify before continuing to the next lesson.
